The Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (OJMPACA), which was founded in 1984 by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) Regional Authority and the French Ministry of Culture, is furthering its musical training objectives of promoting intercultural dialogue between Euromediterranean countries. Since the orchestra was created the emphasis has been on developing relations of exchange and cooperation with some twenty countries on the shores of the Mediterranean and over 1,900 musicians have taken part in the various training sessions.

The training orchestra currently organises several training sessions throughout the year that offer young, future professional musicians from PACA and the Mediterranean Basin an opportunity to experience professional orchestral playing, rehearsals and concerts.

Students are recruited in close partnership with the music schools either by audition or on the recommendation of their teachers and music school directors. During school holidays, students attend 2 to 3 training sessions each year dedicated to orchestral playing that tackles the various styles of repertoire. The OJMPACA also supports new music by regularly commissioning pieces from composers, thereby offering young musicians an educational approach to contemporary music.

Under the direction of Philippe Bender and supported by ten or so well-known tutors, each training session ends with a series of public concerts at which top-flight soloists are regularly invited to perform.

For over twenty years now the orchestra has encouraged intercultural dialogue that combine training, an opportunity to meet people from other cultures and the joys of ensemble playing.
